I make things out of being alive.

Author · Poet · Speaker · Creator · Human

i keep making things because being alive is too strange a thing to leave undocumented.

I have never been particularly interested in becoming one thing.

I want the whole human experience.

The sacred and the filthy. Love and rage. Sex and motherhood. History, grief, politics, bodies, gods, books, dirt, beauty, laughter, and the strange little things that make being alive worth the trouble.

Sometimes it becomes a novel. Sometimes a poem on the bathroom wall at 2am. Sometimes a room full of people remembering something they thought they’d lost.

Sometimes I don’t know what it’s becoming yet.

I’ve changed my mind before. I plan to do it again.

Eventually, it all bleeds ink.

Black-and-white close-up of Nikyla's eyes, wide open.

The room

An older black-and-white photograph of the bedroom wall: letters and poems written straight onto the paint, taped sheets, a moon calendar, a rubber spider.
Written on the wall: it's 3:14am and the silence in this house has a pulse. I am scratching my name into the plaster just to give the dark something to chew on besides my ribs.Written on the wall: i am the sanctuary and i am the wildfire that burns it down. i am the soft lap where the tired soul lays its head, and i am the jagged unyielding rock that breaks the bow of the intruder's ship.A pink armchair holding a pink skeleton, a stuffed sloth, a dragon egg and a toy sword.who is she?Who is she?
A printed promise taped to the wall: Nikyla, I promise i will choose YOU every single time. The Sanctuary · not open yet
The printed manuscript of Chapter One, held down by stones, a heart stone, a pinecone and an articulated dragon.Enter Eden
An index card on the bookshelf: IS THIS MADNESS?? HAVE I GONE MAD?? beside a Che Guevara nesting doll and a gold figure reading.
Written on the wall above the bookshelf: if i am to be a monster, let me at least be a magnificent one.Written on the bathroom panel in purple: If you are looking for a sign from the Universe, This is not it. This is just a woman trying to survive her own plumbing.
A gold shelf of chakra incense with a plastic ghost, a gold peace-sign hand and a LEGO creature.
Nikyla pulling a duck face, eyes sliding sideways, in purple-tinted light.
Written on the wall: To be born of such ghosts means my blood is 70% ink and 30% holy water. i am constantly trying to drawn myself in the former to dilute the latter.Written beside the mirror: They call it a breakdown when the teacup shatters on the floor but no one praises the porcelain for holding the boiling water for decades before.

Every world I build starts in the same dirt.

World I

The Frequencies of Eden

There was only dirt. Until there wasn’t. Remembering is rebellion.

For the child who learned the rules too early. Come make a mess.

no altar, no polished prayer, just a feral creature resting her cheek on home.

stopped pretending to be light and let the ground take my wild, tired skin.

Nikyla curled up asleep in the middle of a wide golden meadow, pine forest and a huge cloudy sky all around.

my skin is wider than the cage they built for the girl i was

laying flat on the earth until my heart remembers how to beat without permission

this is why i am here.

Being alive is a responsibility.

We inherited this world, but it is ours now. We are alive now. That means the work belongs to us: to notice, to remember, to protect each other when it costs us something, and to build whatever comes next with our own hands.
